Robyn’s new book – Unexpected Afghans

My good friend Robyn Chachula has been designing some of the best crochet patterns that I’ve seen in recent years. Her background as an architectural engineer shines through as she creates exquisite wearables and home decor that are, well, unexpected!! Here is a selection from her amazing bibliography:

Her latest book to drop is called Unexpected Afghans: Innovative Crochet Designs with Traditional Techniques – and here is the cover:
It’s at this point of a book review that it is up to me to describe the book. But I don’t think I could sum it up as succinctly as Robyn does in the book’s introduction:
“My initial approach to this book was that pure sense of just
being nosy—what do other crochet designers have in
their houses? That then morphed into, what would an
afghan look like at Leigh Radford’s house or in Drew
Emborsky’s studio? And finally, how amazing would it
be to have all the masters work on one big canvas to
showcase our craft so we all can decorate our homes?”

“The results are astounding,” says Robyn. “I asked
each crochet designer to use the afghan as a vehicle to
showcase their favorite aspect of crochet. Some went
colorful, some turned to granny motifs, and others
came up with intricate stitch patterns. Each project
highlights the beauty of crochet cables, colorwork,
lace, granny motifs, or Tunisian crochet. Plus, every
project has the intimate stamp of the designer’s unique
inspiration.”
And when given that type of freedom (oddly designers have to compromise a LOT when they design for any publications), this is what I came up with!
I used lots of texture and cabling to create a tone on tone chevron pattern. I love how it turned out. The feel of all that texture is just sumptuous and I want it to be winter NOW so that I can curl up in front of the fireplace snuggled underneath it.
Anywho….
