February is National Smocking Month

Hello Smocking Guild Members.

Wednesday, February 13, 2013, will be the first Wee Care Garment work day for 2013. It is to be held at the Hoover Library in order to provide more room than our normal meeting place, The Sewing Room.    We will be starting when the Library opens at  9 – 9:30 am  and staying until the job is done, or we are too tired to continue.  Please set aside this important day so we can get  as much done as possible.  We will eat lunch in the Coffeeology Cafe at the library.

In addition, Wendy Garner of Daytime Alabama will  be filming a short (3 – minute) segment for Channel 13, WVTM-TV.  Our  President, Karen Duncan, has graciously agreed to teach Wendy smocking.     As you know, February is National Smocking month, so let’s put our best  foot forward by showing how, not only to smock, but the great deal of work  involved in preparing the fabric.

Because the TV crew will be showing up at 10:00 a.m., it  is important that we set up as quickly as possible.  If you have an area you would  particularly like to work, please let us know.   Your expertise is  invaluable.  We  would like to show them just how much work is  involved in providing Children’s Hospital the quality garments for which the  Guild is known.

Oh yes, please bring your already smocked garments  that you made in times past, last year or whenever, in order to show just  how beautiful smocked garments can be.  We will have a “tree” to hang them  on, so please provide a hanger for them.

So, please come, roll up your sleeves up and plan  on a work day at the Library next week. Just because it’s a work day doesn’t  mean we can’t have a lot of fun….and we will!

From the girliest little girl to the ‘tough guy’ little boy, you’ll find super cute patterns for babes and toddlers at www.RAKJpatterns.com .

They have some great free patterns, but most of their patterns for sale are baby-oriented and are available as instant downloads.  Freebies include this adorable Daydream beanie which can be easily customized for any kiddo with colors to suit your taste.

But, that’s not all.  In addition to these cutesy baby caps, they have patterns for scarves, bags, slippers, and photography props designed for baby.  These designs are worth a gander.

To be SURE you take a gander in their direction, the nice folks at RAKJ Patterns are offering a nice collection of patterns free to our readers.  I fell in love with the Owl themed patterns, so these are the ones you can win!  They’re not just for babies, either.  There are a lot of ways to use these designs, but the baby cap is pretty cute too, don’t you think?  Still, that cute Owl Tote Bag is my fave!

The rules of entering this Giveaway are a bit different than previous ones.  First, you’ll leave a brief message below in the Comments section including your User Name and Zip code.  Then you’ll visit the pattern site www.RAKJpatterns.com and click on the Facebook link there to leave a comment on their Facebook page and sign up to receive their newsletter while you’re there.  They have so many patterns and are constantly adding new ones that you might appreciate receiving updates via their newsletter.

The Pattern Giveaway runs through Wednesday, February 29, 2012, so don’t delay!

A winner will be chosen at random from all the comments left on the Facebook page who have also left a comment here.  You’ll be notified via private email and an announcement on this blog.  Then, you’ll have 48 hours to get back to me with your preferred email address to receive your instant download of the patterns.

BSAGA will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, in Meeting Rooms A and B downstairs in the Hoover Public Library.  The  wee care workshop has been postponed until March 14 which will be a longer meeting due to the workshop.  More info to follow later!

At this meeting we will continue the project started last month with Sandi Boylan – the  pin cushion and scissor fob .  Please bring your kit to the meeting if you want the fob to match the holder.  Sandi will have ribbon and beads, etc but no guarantee they will match.

Glenda asked me to remind you,  if  you haven’t already, to please pay your SAGA dues online.  She needs you to give her your membership number.  This is very important if we expect to receive a grant for our retreat.

February is Coming to an End

Are you tired of shoveling snow? Are you ready to start seeing spring flowers?
We had a very warm month of January with highs in the 60′s while the majority of the Eastern United States was buried in feet of snow! I was starting to believe winter was over here in Oregon and spring was on the way. My dream for an early spring was tarnished a week ago after we received 9 inches of snow in one night. I figured ok, this was a random thing after all we have global warming here on the west coast. No we have had several storms since with the grandiose on saturday bringing another foot of snow. At this point, i’ve given up shoveling the walk and I drive over the mounds of snow.
Are you wondering why I am writing about the snow in Oregon? It’s simple. I am ready for Spring, fresh new flowers popping up in my flower beds, and new patterns.
Our new patterns for Spring are starting to slowly trickle in and I am thrilled because this means spring weather is around the corner and I no longer have to wear my Norwegian sweaters (ok but I love them), sorels, etc.
So without further ado here is the list we have of today available for pre-order! It’s very important to Pre-Order the patterns because they do Sell-Out and I know you want your customers to shop from you and not elsewhere.

The February meeting of the Birmingham Smocking Arts Guild of America will be a shopping trip to Martha’s Heirlooms, Billie’s Heirlooms and possibly another shop if someone has an idea.  We will meet in the back parking lot at Hoover Library at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2011.  We will carpool to the various shops and eat lunch out.  (The back parking lot is where we parked in January when we unloaded our machines.)
